Nottingham Forest extended their winning streak to seven matches across all competitions for the first time in 19 years with a 2-0 victory over Luton in the FA Cup.
The win added to their impressive run of six consecutive Premier League victories, as they triumphed over the Championship side thanks to goals from Ryan Yates and Ramon Sosa.
This success matched the run achieved by Colin Calderwood’s team in October and November of 2006, furthering the positive momentum at the City Ground.
Forest comfortably secured their spot in Sunday’s fourth-round draw and can now shift their focus to Tuesday’s critical Premier League clash against Liverpool, which could be pivotal in determining their potential title aspirations.
Luton, playing their first match since the midweek departure of manager Rob Edwards, struggled to make an impact and never truly looked like threatening a win.
Ahead of Tuesday’s important fixture, Nuno Espirito Santo made a full set of changes to the starting lineup, but despite the rotation, Forest quickly found their rhythm, creating several early chances.
They should have taken the lead in the 17th minute when Taiwo Awoniyi missed a golden opportunity. After a long ball found him 12 yards from goal, he dragged his shot wide.
Luton, still adjusting to life after Edwards, created a few moments of danger. Forest goalkeeper Carlos Miguel was forced to palm Liam Walsh’s long-range shot over the bar and later denied Isaiah Jones a spectacular goal after the Luton player weaved his way into the box.
Forest’s pressure eventually paid off in the 40th minute when Yates headed home Sosa’s superb cross into the bottom corner.
Awoniyi had another chance to double the lead early in the second half when another loose ball fell to him, but his weak shot was saved by Thomas Kaminski.
The second goal came in the 67th minute when Jota Silva powered down the right wing and squared the ball for Sosa to finish from close range.
The two-goal cushion was enough for Forest to see out the match, with their attention now turning to the upcoming visit of Arne Slot’s men.
