Belgium football association announced on Friday that Domenico Tedesco has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the national team following underwhelming results at Euro 2024 and the Nations League.
“The Red Devils did not perform as we hoped at Euro 2024, nor in the subsequent Nations League campaign,” the RBFA stated on their website.
Tedesco, who took over the role in February 2023 after Roberto Martinez’s departure, was tasked with reshaping the squad after the exit of the country’s celebrated “golden generation.”
Despite securing qualification for Euro 2024, Belgium was eliminated in the Round of 16 by France, who then defeated them twice more in the Nations League, leaving the team third in their group. The Red Devils now face a relegation play-off against Ukraine in March.
Reflecting on his tenure, Tedesco said: “I was always proud to be the coach of the Red Devils; we achieved great things together.
This team is still at the beginning of its development and will cause a sensation in the coming years. I wish the players, the great employees of the federation, and the fans all the best from the bottom of my heart.”
Along with Tedesco, five members of his coaching staff were also dismissed.
RBFA CEO Peter Willems commended Tedesco’s contributions, saying, “Domenico made an excellent start as national coach and proved that there are still great things possible, even after the send-off of the previous generation. He has integrated several young players into the team, and his successor can build on this. We would like to thank him and his team for their pleasant cooperation, hard work, and dedication, and wish them all the best for the future.”
The RBFA has not set a timeline for naming a replacement, though Belgian media have speculated that French coaches Rudi Garcia and Thierry Henry are strong contenders.
Meanwhile, Belgium’s journey to the 2026 World Cup begins with an away match against North Macedonia in June.
