Former England Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey has stepped down from his role as a Church of England priest after an investigation uncovered his support for reinstating a priest accused of child abuse.
David Tudor, who was barred from priestly duties for five years in the 1980s due to allegations of assaulting teenage girls, was later allowed to resume under supervision following Lord Carey’s intervention.
Despite this, Tudor was only dismissed from his role in October this year after admitting to sexual misconduct.
In his resignation letter, Lord Carey relinquished his “permission to officiate,” stating it had been an “honour to serve” throughout his ministry spanning over six decades.
The 89-year-old, named in the investigation into Tudor’s misconduct, had allowed Tudor to return to ministry in 1993 while serving as Archbishop of Canterbury.
The Church, acknowledging the decision was made with “some trepidation,” revealed to the that Tudor’s reinstatement came with specific supervisory measures, including a restriction against being alone with children.
