The Edo State Security Corps has arrested 18 individuals suspected of involvement in kidnapping and armed robbery along the Benin-Auchi Road.
The operation, which took place on Friday near Eguedion Camp, close to an army checkpoint, also led to the recovery of 38 locally-made guns, pellets, and various charms.
The Corps Commandant, Friday Ibadin, said the arrests were made during a bush combing exercise aimed at flushing out criminal elements in the area.
“While patrolling along Benin-Auchi Road by Eguedion Camp, our officers spotted two individuals armed with guns. Upon sighting security personnel, they attempted to flee but were pursued to their hideout, where 18 suspects were apprehended,” Ibadin stated.
He further revealed that 17 of the suspects are non-indigenes, while one hails from the Agbede community. “We recovered 38 fully loaded locally-made guns and charms during the operation,” he added.
Reassuring residents of the government’s commitment to security, Ibadin noted, “Our men will continue to comb the bushes and work with locals to rid our forests of criminals. Edo State must be safe and secure for all.”
The arrested suspects were handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of Agbede Police Station for further investigation. Ibadin called for stronger collaboration between the Corps and other security agencies, emphasizing the need for joint efforts in tackling crime.
The arrests come just days after Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, directed security agencies to intensify efforts in making forests and farmlands safe for residents.
