The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has called for a thorough investigation into an alleged attack on journalists by a Department of State Services official during the Edo Governorship Election Tribunal sitting at the High Court in Benin City.
In a statement signed by the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Edo State Council, Festus Alenkhe and the Secretary, Andy Egbon, the council lauded Governor Okpebholo’s swift action in addressing the incident, which reportedly occurred on Monday.
The NUJ commended the governor for his commitment to the safety and security of journalists, describing his intervention as a demonstration of his dedication to safeguarding press freedom and upholding democratic principles.
“We sincerely appreciate Governor Okpebholo for his prompt response, which has sent a clear message that such attacks will not be tolerated in Edo State,” the NUJ statement read.
The governor has directed the relevant security agency to investigate the allegations raised by the NUJ and ensure that those involved are held accountable.
The NUJ also called on all stakeholders to support efforts to create a safe and respectful environment for media professionals in the state.
“As the governor continues to show his commitment to protecting the rights of journalists, we pledge our support for his administration’s efforts to foster a secure and enabling environment for media practice,” the statement added.
The union emphasized that Governor Okpebholo’s actions resonate with the principles of democracy and the rule of law, urging other leaders to emulate his stance.
