The Main Organizing Committee of the ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon has announced an increase in the prize money for the 5km fun run category, raising it from $750 to $1,000, approximately N1.7m ahead of the 2025 edition.
The event, which will mark ECOWAS’ 50th anniversary, aims to promote fitness and inclusivity across the region.
MOC Chairman and Director of the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre in Ouagadougou, Amb. Francis Chuks Njoaguani, explained that the decision to increase the prize money was designed to benefit more participants and encourage broader engagement from ECOWAS citizens.
“The 5km fun run is special to us because we initiated it as part of the 21km race so that more of our people will embrace the culture of walking, jogging, exercise, and running and make it part of their daily routine,” Njoaguani stated.
He added, “That is why we have decided to increase the prize money to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ECOWAS and encourage our people to make running a way of life.”
The marathon, set to take place on March 1, 2025, in Abuja, will feature two categories: the 21km half marathon and the 5km fun run.
While the half marathon will begin and end at the ECOWAS Commission in Asokoro, the fun run will start at Eagle Square and conclude at the Commission.
To foster regional participation, elite athletes from all ECOWAS member states will be invited to compete for a total prize pool exceeding $71,000.
Race Director Gabriel Okon highlighted the event’s inclusivity, noting that it caters to both professional athletes and fitness enthusiasts.
“The event is for elites and fun runners and other classes of fitness enthusiasts from across the continent. The marathon is not only a celebration of athleticism but also a showcase of unity and the vibrant spirit of the region,” Okon remarked.
