The Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, has indefinitely suspended a former aide to Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, over allegations of cult-related activities.
According to The PUNCH, the student, Felix Okemini, who was recently admitted to study Political Science, previously served as the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security (Ebonyi North) before his dismissal earlier this week.
Okemini sparked controversy after being photographed wearing an insignia suspected to be linked to a secret cult during the university’s matriculation ceremony on March 14.
The image quickly circulated on social media, drawing widespread condemnation and calls for his removal from both government and the institution.
In response to the backlash, Governor Nwifuru, through the Secretary to the State Government, Grace Umezuruike, announced Okemini’s dismissal. Shortly after, the university also took disciplinary action.
In a letter signed by the university’s Registrar, Dr. Ifeanyi Igwe, on Friday, Okemini was informed of his indefinite suspension due to a violation of the school’s matriculation oath.
“You are hereby informed of your matriculation oath and the fact that cultism and cult-related activities are unacceptable and against the rules and regulations governing students’ activities in the university,” the letter stated.
It further emphasized that cultism poses a “security and moral threat to the university community” and that an investigation into the matter would be conducted by the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.
“Consequently, the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Senate, has directed that you be suspended indefinitely from the university pending the outcome of the investigation,” the letter added.
