Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has urged Edo Queens FC of Benin, to overcome South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in their upcoming clash at the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League in Casablanca, Morocco.
The Governor emphasized the importance of securing victory to ensure their progression into the semifinals and boost Nigeria’s reputation in the tournament.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, in Benin City, Governor Okpebholo expressed pride in the team’s impressive performance so far.
He reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for the Queens, as they represent both the state and the nation on the continental stage.
“I think the girls might be worried about the change of leadership in the Edo State, but I want them to know that we are with them,” the governor stated. “I have been briefed, and I know our team is in Morocco doing well. So, we will not abandon them. We are aware of the exploits, and I urge them to continue to dominate.”
Edo Queens, reigning champions of the Nigeria Women’s Premier League, have shown exceptional form in Group B of the tournament.
They kicked off their campaign with an emphatic 3-0 victory against Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, courtesy of goals from Emem Essien, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Goodness Osigwe.
However, their momentum was slightly halted in a goalless draw against Masar FC of Egypt on Wednesday.
Despite the stalemate, the Queens lead Group B and require at least a draw in their final group game against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns to secure a semifinal spot.
The high-stakes match is scheduled for Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 6 p.m. in Casablanca.
“My message to Edo Queens is that they have nothing to worry about. We are solidly behind them. We want our girls to beat Sundown Saturday and win for me,” Okpebholo said.
He also charged the team to aim for the ultimate prize, adding, “Go ahead to also win the cup and bring it to your fatherland. Sports will surely be given the top priority it deserves in my government.”
As the only Nigerian club competing in 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League, Edo Queens carry the hopes of millions.
Their journey so far reflects their determination and resilience, and they are now just a step away from making history in the tournament.
