Veteran Nigerian disc jockey, Oluwaforijimi Amu, popularly known as DJ Jimmy Jatt, has opened up about his health struggles, including losing his sight in 2020 and a subsequent diagnosis of chronic kidney disease.
Speaking on Channels TV’s Rubbin’ Minds, hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the iconic DJ shared details of his journey, which began when he decided to spend more time outside Nigeria in 2019 after years of living in Lagos.
“In 2019, I made a conscious decision to explore the world,” he said. “I had spent my entire life in Lagos and wanted to experience life in Europe, America, and other places.”
However, in 2020, his plans took an unexpected turn. “I started experiencing health challenges. I lost my sight and had to undergo surgery to regain it,” DJ Jimmy Jatt revealed.
Despite this, he remained committed to his goal and later relocated to the United States, where he received another life-changing diagnosis.
“While in the U.S., I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. I had to undergo dialysis and eventually returned to Nigeria for a kidney transplant,” he recounted.
After the successful procedure, DJ Jimmy Jatt prioritized his recovery before resuming his career.
“Even while I was abroad, I continued DJing across America and Europe. But eventually, I felt it was time to come back home, so I returned to Nigeria in December.”
He also addressed common misconceptions about kidney disease, emphasizing that lifestyle choices are not always to blame.
“I’ve never smoked and had stopped drinking alcohol years ago,” he said, adding that his condition was linked to diabetes.
Highlighting the importance of health awareness, DJ Jimmy Jatt urged people to prioritize regular medical check-ups.
“It’s important to understand your health and manage it well,” he concluded.
