A star-studded lineup of Brazilian football legends, including World Cup champions Ronaldinho, Cafu, and Bebeto, will take to the field for a charity match aimed at raising funds for flood victims in southern Brazil.
According to AFP, the organizers of the match disclosed this on Wednesday.
Scheduled for Sunday at 4:00 pm, 1900 GMT, the game will be held at the historic Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
The event will also feature current men’s national team coach Dorival Junior and women’s team defender Tamires.
“We’ve raised the trophy as world champions, now let’s raise the cup of solidarity,” said 1994 and 2002 World Cup winner Cafu, in comments carried on news site Globo Esporte.
“I want to invite all Brazilians to support this effort to help our brothers in Rio Grande do Sul,” Dorival Junior said in a video released by the Brazilian Football Confederation.
The southern state has been devastated by weeks of unprecedented flooding, resulting in over 160 fatalities and leaving 90 percent of its towns, including the state capital Porto Alegre, submerged.
Tickets for the charity match will start at around $6, with all proceeds from ticket sales and the television broadcast going to support flood victims.
The event is sponsored by TV network Globo, the Brazilian Football Confederation , Rio city hall, and the renowned football club Flamengo.
