The Shuwa Arab community in Borno State has raised concerns over the arrest and detention of Attom Magira, the 2023 Borno Central Senatorial candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party by petitioning the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The group revealed that Magira was apprehended on December 22 by operatives of the Borno State Police Command’s crack unit.
In a petition dated December 25 and signed by its convener, Saheed Ambagama, the community criticized the detention, describing it as “a blatant violation of Magira’s human rights and an attempt to silence his voice as a representative of the people.”
They called on the Inspector General to probe the arrest and safeguard Magira’s constitutional rights.
“The recent arrest and continued illegal detention of Attom Magira Tom by the infamous crack unit of the police in Borno State is a serious affront to democracy and justice,” the petition read.
“Magira Tom, a well-known political figure and advocate for the rights of the poor, has been held for more than 24 hours without due process, raising grave concerns about political persecution in Nigeria’s democratic system.
“Although official reasons for his detention remain unclear, it is widely believed that his recent resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party and his anticipated alignment with another political platform have unsettled powerful actors in the state.”
The group further alleged that Magira’s bold political ambitions and advocacy for democratic values might have made him a target of intimidation.
“We urge you (Inspector General of Police) to investigate this matter promptly and ensure that Magira’s fundamental human rights are respected and protected,” the group stated.
Efforts to obtain details about the charges against Magira have so far been unsuccessful.
While the officer in charge of the crack unit confirmed the arrest, they declined to provide further information.
Additionally, attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, Daso Nahum, for clarification were futile, as multiple calls and messages to his contact went unanswered.
