The national grid suffered another collapse on Wednesday, plunging many parts of Nigeria into darkness.
The incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m., resulting in a significant loss of power generation.
Although efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Ndidi Mbah, were unsuccessful, she informed our correspondent that she was attending a function and could not respond at the time.
Meanwhile, sources within some power generation companies confirmed there was a grid disturbance on Wednesday morning.
Reports indicated that the system tripped, causing power to go off before midday.
At 11 a.m., the grid’s power generation stood at 4,064 megawatts. This figure plummeted to 1,203MW by noon and dropped to zero megawatts at 1 p.m.
This marks the first grid collapse of 2025, following a line tripping incident in January. The grid recorded 12 collapses in 2024 and more than 100 incidents in the past decade.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company acknowledged the development on its X account.
“Dear Valued Customer, We regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am today causing a power outage across our franchise areas.
“While gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to serve you better,” the statement read.
