The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company has raised alarm over the vandalism of key electricity infrastructure in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, leading to widespread power outages in the area.
According to The PUNCH, the Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC, Mr. Emeka Ezeh the company disclosed that the Udemezue 11KV Feeder was vandalized in the early hours of January 5, cutting off electricity supply to several parts of the metropolis.
Ezeh revealed that the affected locations include Oroko-onuoha, Udensi, Kpirikpiri, Ogbaga Road, New Layout, Udemezue, Low-Cost Housing Estate, and Hilltop Road.
Prominent establishments such as Amikaba, Siren Hotel, Man City Hotel, Muchels Hotel, De Pablo Hotel, and Unity FM radio station have also been impacted.
“Our esteemed customers in Abakaliki are experiencing a power outage caused by the vandalism of the Udemezue 11KV Feeder at around 2:40 a.m. on January 5. This was discovered during a patrol by our technical team,” Ezeh explained.
He detailed that approximately 16 metres of 150mm2 x 3core armoured underground cable were stolen, leaving over 70 public and private transformers without power.
“We deeply regret this unfortunate incident and appeal to our customers for patience and understanding as we work on replacing the stolen and damaged materials,” he added.
Ezeh assured residents that EEDC was making every effort to restore electricity in the shortest possible time.
“EEDC is committed to delivering reliable services to its customers. Our team is working diligently to resolve the situation and reinstate power supply to the affected areas,” he emphasized.
