Two people lost their lives, while five others sustained severe injuries in a road accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday morning.
The crash occurred around 7:15 a.m. near Danco Filling Station, Ogun State.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that a Toyota Sienna space bus, with registration number EPE 430 HT, rammed into a stationary luxury bus belonging to Young Shall Grow Transport Company.
The Sienna, driven by Adewale Yusuf, reportedly lost control and collided with the luxury bus, which had stopped due to a minor accident ahead.
According to the state police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police Omolola Odutola, “The impact of the crash resulted in severe injuries to five passengers, who were immediately taken to Live Well Hospital in Sagamu. Unfortunately, two male passengers, identified as Charles Izuchukwu, a staff member of Babcock University, and another yet-to-be-identified male, succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.”
She further revealed that the deceased were taken to Last Home Green Mortuary in Sagamu, while the driver of the Sienna and two other passengers are currently receiving medical attention.
The Motor Traffic Department responded swiftly to the accident scene, documenting the incident and clearing the wreckage to restore traffic flow. Both vehicles have since been towed to the MTD office in Sagamu for further investigation and assessment by Vehicle Inspection Officers.
The police have once again urged motorists to prioritize safety and avoid reckless driving. “Excessive speeding, lack of focus, and negligence continue to be major contributors to road crashes.
Drivers must also avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, using expired tires, and flouting traffic regulations,” Odutola warned.
She emphasized that law enforcement agencies remain committed to ensuring road safety and that violators of traffic regulations would face legal consequences.
“We encourage the public to report reckless drivers and hazardous road conditions to the nearest police station or road safety officials,” she added.
Motorists, particularly commercial drivers, have been advised to adhere to speed limits, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, and prioritize passengers’ safety over financial gain.
