The General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN, Major General AE Abubakar, inaugurated the Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja Recreational Park at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment on Saturday.
The newly opened facility is named after Mariya Lagbaja, the immediate past president of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association, to recognize her significant contributions to the welfare of military personnel and their families within the 3 Division.
The Nigerian Army highlighted that the park features a variety of amenities designed to improve the quality of life for the barracks community. Facilities include a modern swimming pool, a synthetic 5-a-side football pitch, trampolines, bouncy castles, electric merry-go-round trains, swings, bicycles, and battery-powered bikes.
The park is fully illuminated for day and nighttime use.
While speaking at the event, Major General Abubakar said, “This park is more than a recreational space; it symbolizes our commitment to the well-being of our soldiers and their families. It serves as a venue for fostering community spirit, encouraging physical activity, and providing relaxation and entertainment.”
He also paid tribute to the late Lt. Gen. TA Lagbaja, the 23rd Chief of Army Staff, emphasizing his legacy of prioritizing community and welfare.
“We honour General Lagbaja for his dedication to service and his belief in the importance of community. This facility is a testament to his enduring legacy,” Abubakar remarked.
Acknowledging the role of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. OO Oluyede, in supporting the initiative, Abubakar stated, “This milestone is possible because of the dedication of many individuals and the unwavering support of the Chief of Army Staff, who has ensured our division is well-equipped to serve effectively.”
The ceremony included a guided tour of the park’s facilities, the launch of recreational equipment, and a novelty football match between teams from NAOWA and NASWA. The event was a celebratory moment for the barracks community.
The park aims to create a lasting impact on soldiers and their families by enhancing their quality of life.
“I urge everyone to take advantage of this facility and create cherished memories with loved ones,” the GOC added.
