Tensions flared in Onitsha, Anambra State, over the weekend as an angry mob set two suspected revenue agents on fire following an incident that led to the death of a bystander.
According to The Nation, the confrontation, which occurred at Old Market Road near Venn Road by Egerton, highlights growing frustration among residents over the conduct of revenue collectors in the state.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tragedy began when the agents allegedly tried to force a tipper driver to stop, demanding payment of an unspecified amount. In their bid to seize control of the vehicle, they reportedly struggled with the driver over the steering.
The struggle caused the driver to lose control of the tipper, which veered off the road and struck a pedestrian, killing the individual instantly.
Enraged by the incident, residents, including tricycle operators, prevented the agents from escaping. They attacked them with various objects before setting two of them ablaze. Four other agents reportedly managed to escape.
“This is one death too many,” said an eyewitness who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “For years, these revenue collectors have been harassing Ndi Anambra, causing accidents and even deaths. Today, they paid the price for their actions.”
The police swiftly intervened to restore order. Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the incident and assured the public that the situation was under control.
“Our officers responded immediately to the fatal accident and the subsequent unrest. We are collaborating with relevant authorities to fully understand what transpired and to ensure measures are put in place to prevent a recurrence,” Ikenga stated.
However, the incident has sparked controversy over the role of revenue agents in the state. While some residents accused the agents of violent and extortionate tactics, a government official, who preferred to remain anonymous, claimed that the individuals involved were not state-sanctioned agents but impostors.
“The government is working tirelessly to improve the state, but unfortunately, some elements are tarnishing the image of the administration,” the official said.
