A faction of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has named Oba Oladipo Olaitan as its acting leader following the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo.
The announcement was made after a meeting held at Adebanjo’s residence in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State.
Oba Olaitan, who previously served as Afenifere’s deputy leader, will assume the role in an acting capacity until Adebanjo’s final burial, after which he will be confirmed as the substantive leader.
The Secretary-General of the faction, Chief Sola Ebiseni, disclosed this in a statement issued in Akure, Ondo State.
According to the communique, the decision was based on recommendations from the group’s National Caucus. “Oba Oladipo Olaitan has been an active member of Afenifere for over 45 years, serving in different capacities, including as National Financial Secretary under Chief Reuben Fasoranti and later as Deputy Leader under Chief Ayo Adebanjo,” the statement read.
The group also raised concerns about the security situation in the country, highlighting the recent kidnapping of a young man, Prince Eniola Ojajuni.
“Afenifere decried the worsening security situation in the country. Members received reports of a young man, Prince Eniola Ojajuni, whose ordeal in the hands of kidnappers has been circulating on social media for almost a week,” the communique noted.
The group called on authorities in Ondo and Kogi States, as well as security agencies, to act swiftly in ensuring the victim’s rescue. “The meeting called on the governments of Ondo and Kogi States, where the abduction reportedly took place, and the relevant security agencies to act without further delay,” it added.
