The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has officially announced the passing of its leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, describing him as a steadfast advocate for restructuring, true federalism, and national equity.
In a statement released on Friday, February 14, Afenifere’s Secretary-General, Chief Sola Ebiseni, confirmed that Adebanjo died at the age of 96.
“Afenifere wishes to formally announce the passing, earlier today, February 14, 2025, of our leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, at the age of 96,” Ebiseni stated.
He described Adebanjo as a committed follower of Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s political philosophy and a strong voice for progressive governance.
“Ayo Adebanjo was known for his relentless push for restructuring, true federalism, and a Nigeria built on equity, fairness, and a true sense of belonging for all ethnic nationalities,” he said.
Reflecting on Adebanjo’s unwavering dedication to Nigeria’s political evolution, Ebiseni recalled that the late elder statesman often spoke about preparing for his eventual departure while urging the next generation to continue the struggle.
“For nearly a decade, he reminded us that he was already at the ‘departure lounge,’ yet he never wavered in his commitment to the fight for a better Nigeria,” Ebiseni noted.
He assured that Afenifere would uphold Adebanjo’s ideals, stating, “We will undoubtedly keep the banner flying.”
Ebiseni added that further details would be communicated as directed by Afenifere’s Deputy Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, in consultation with Adebanjo’s family.
