Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives for Aba North and South Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance, has expressed regret over a controversial video from 2024 that depicted him allegedly threatening a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.
The footage, which showed Ikwechegh warning that he could make the e-hailing driver “disappear,” sparked public outrage and widespread criticism on social media.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday, January 28, Ikwechegh described the incident as unfortunate and clarified that he and Abuwatseya have since reconciled.
“What happened was quite unfortunate, but I see it as an opportunity to build a better relationship with the young man. Today, we are friends,” Ikwechegh said.
The lawmaker emphasized that the incident, which was taken to court, had no legal merit and was eventually dismissed.
“The video people saw captured a low moment. It showed only one part of the story. What led to my reaction was not recorded, and I believe that context matters,” he explained.
Ikwechegh also defended his public image, stating, “I have been in the public eye for a long time, and I have never been involved in any scandal. That video does not define who I am.”
The representative further revealed that the incident has allowed him to build connections with Abuwatseya and others in his circle.
“The young man is my friend now. I’ve become close to his pastor and even made new friends through this experience,” Ikwechegh added, humorously remarking, “Now, the whole country knows me as the man who ‘maketh things to disappear.’”
