Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has expressed disappointment over lapses in the state’s Ramadan feeding programme after an unannounced visit to several feeding centres in Dutse Local Government Area.
According to The PUNCH, the inspection revealed cases of mismanagement and poor hygiene in some centres, despite the government’s significant investment in the initiative.
The feeding programme, which has a budget exceeding ₦4.8 billion, is jointly funded by the state government (55%) and local governments (45%).
It aims to provide meals to vulnerable residents across the state’s 287 wards, including those in rehabilitation centres, motor parks, and markets.
During his visit to feeding centres in Dundubus, Karnaya, Gaci, and Limawa—communities on the outskirts of Dutse—Governor Namadi expressed dissatisfaction with the conditions he observed.
“I am disappointed, but not surprised, by the level of mismanagement and neglect I have seen today,” he stated. “It is unacceptable that some individuals would seek to cheat and deprive our people of the benefits they deserve.”
While some centres were commended for their efficiency and commitment, others were found wanting in resource management and hygiene standards.
Namadi stressed the need for transparency and fairness in the distribution process, calling on those responsible to take immediate corrective action.
The governor assured residents that his administration would implement necessary measures to enhance service delivery and close identified gaps.
“We will not tolerate inefficiency. Corrective measures will be implemented to ensure that all feeding centres operate effectively and with dignity,” he added.
He also urged local authorities and community leaders to intensify monitoring efforts to guarantee the programme’s success. “The welfare of our people remains our top priority, and we will ensure that this initiative serves its purpose,” he emphasized.
