Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has strongly condemned the killing of three personnel from the state security outfit, Civil Protection Guards, in Gwer West Local Government Area.
The tragic incident, which took place early Tuesday, sparked widespread protests in Naka, the council headquarters.
In response to the attack, enraged residents set fire to the Local Government secretariat, the palace of the Ter Nagi, and several private properties.
Governor Alia, through a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Kula Tersoo, described the attack, allegedly perpetrated by suspected armed herders, as a blatant assault on the peace and security of Benue communities.
“We deeply mourn the murder of these brave members of the Civil Protection Guards who were on duty to protect our people at On-MbaAondo, Tsambe-Mbesev ward of Gwer West. Their killing is an affront to our collective security,” the statement read.
While acknowledging the anger and frustration of the people, Alia appealed for calm, urging residents to avoid further destruction of public and private properties.
“We understand the deep rage that has led to the unrest in Naka, including the unfortunate burning of the local government secretariat and the palace of Ter Nagi by protesters. However, we must channel our anger constructively. Destroying our own assets only derails our efforts to rebuild and secure our communities,” he said.
The governor directed security agencies to swiftly track down and apprehend those responsible for the killings, emphasizing that justice would be served.
“The security of our people is paramount. We will not relent until those behind this act of violence are brought to justice,” he assured.
Reaffirming his administration’s dedication to enhancing security across the state, Alia urged citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious activities.
“In these difficult times, we must stand together against violence and work towards peace and justice. Together, we can overcome these challenges and build a safer Benue for all,” he said.
