A 40-year-old farmer, Abdullahi Rasaki, lost his life after a palm tree fell on him in Bogije Village, Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State.
The tragic incident occurred around 3:30 pm on Sunday while Rasaki and a colleague, Waheed Abbass, were felling palm trees in the Egbe Semi Jeje area of Oke Sopen.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, stated that the matter was reported later that evening by a resident, Gbamila Sunday.
According to Odutola, Rasaki cried out for help after the tree fell on him, attracting the attention of nearby residents who rushed to his aid.
“Neighbours in the vicinity immediately responded, removing the tree and rushing him to the General Hospital, Sagamu, for treatment,” she said.
Unfortunately, medical personnel at the hospital confirmed him dead on arrival, with suspicions that the weight of the tree had caused fatal injuries.
His remains have since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Odutola noted that the case is under investigation by the Divisional Crime Branch to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as new details emerge,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and advised the public to exercise caution while engaging in tree-felling and farming activities to prevent similar accidents.
