The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has commenced the 21-day traditional rites, known as “Oro Ipebi,” required before officially ascending the throne.
A statement released on Friday by the monarch’s Chief of Staff, Rotimi Osuntola, in Ibadan, confirmed that the rites began on March 7 and will continue until March 29, 2025.
As part of the customary process, a curfew has been imposed across Oyo township from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily during this period.
“The Aláàfin of Oyo Kingdom hereby announces the commencement of ÒRÒ ÌPĘBÍ, the mandatory rites for His Imperial Majesty before his ascension to the revered throne,” Osuntola stated.
He emphasized that movement during the curfew hours is strictly prohibited, warning that violators will be detained until 7:00 a.m. the following day.
“Oro Ipebi requires the incoming Alaafin to go into absolute seclusion while it lasts. It is sacrosanct for the ascending Ikú-Bàbá-Yèyé and must be respected by all and sundry,” he added.
The official coronation of Oba Akeem Owoade is scheduled to take place on April 5, 2025, in Oyo town.
