Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that no lives were lost after a fire broke out at Ago Medical Centre, located off Ago Palace Road in Lagos.
In a statement issued on Friday, LASEMA’s Director-General, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed that emergency responders were swiftly mobilized to the scene following distress calls received via the 767/112 emergency toll-free lines at exactly 6:29 PM.
Oke-Osayintolu noted that upon arrival at 6:50 PM, LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team discovered that a section of the hospital’s storey building was engulfed in flames.
“Our team arrived at the scene within minutes and immediately initiated fire containment measures to prevent further escalation. Thankfully, there were no casualties,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
Preliminary investigations conducted by LASEMA revealed that the fire was triggered by an electrical surge.
The incident occurred shortly after public power supply was restored, leading to a spark that ignited the blaze.
“The initial findings suggest that the fire started due to an electrical surge when power was restored. This underscores the need for proper electrical safety measures in residential and commercial buildings,” said a senior emergency official on the scene.
Despite the intensity of the blaze, emergency responders, including the LASEMA Response Team, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other agencies, worked tirelessly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.
“Our priority is to ensure that the fire does not extend to adjoining structures. Our personnel are on the ground, making concerted efforts to bring the situation under control,” an official from the Lagos Fire Service remarked.
As of the time of this report, firefighters and emergency responders are still battling to completely extinguish the fire.
Recovery operations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as the situation unfolds.
