The Oyo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a fatal shooting that took place in the early hours of Sunday, February 2, 2025, at Bodija, Ibadan.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, an unidentified man was pursued and shot dead a few blocks away from a well-known lounge in the area.
Osifeso clarified that officers arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the report to restore order and not to escalate the situation, contrary to claims circulating on social media.
“The swift presence of the Police at the scene minutes after it was reported was to maintain law and order and not to further increase the pandemonium,” he stated.
He also dismissed allegations that the Police accidentally shot and killed a student during efforts to disperse onlookers.
“Emphatically, there were no killings by the Police nor recorded death of any student before, during, and after the lawful dispersal of onlookers from the scene of the crime,” Osifeso added.
The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department at Iyaganku. The investigation is being led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police, under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Sonubi Ayodele.
