The Anambra State Police Command, in collaboration with the military and other security agencies, has neutralized five suspected members of an armed secessionist group during a raid on their camp in Ufuma, Orumba North Local Government Area.
The operation, which took place on Tuesday along Umugem Road, led to the recovery of several weapons, including two AK-47 rifles, a pump-action gun, four undetonated improvised explosive devices, and a 75-volt battery.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, praised the joint efforts of the security agencies involved.
“The operation, carried out on January 14, 2025, at about 12:30 pm, successfully neutralized five members of the gang while others escaped with bullet wounds,” he said.
SP Ikenga confirmed that the camp used by the suspected criminals had been destroyed and assured residents of continued efforts to dismantle such networks.
He stated, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, commends the synergy among the police, military, and other security agencies. He also appeals to the public to provide useful information to help apprehend the fleeing suspects.”
The operation comes shortly after two Catholic Reverend Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ, were abducted along Ufuma Road. The sisters had reportedly been returning from a vocational association meeting in Ogboji, a nearby community, when they were kidnapped.
Addressing concerns about security in the area, SP Ikenga assured residents that efforts to restore peace and stability were ongoing.
“We remain committed to ensuring the safety of citizens and urge everyone to cooperate with security agencies to deny these criminal elements any room to operate,” he added.
