The Lagos State Government has announced the successful vaccination of over 24 million residents against yellow fever, measles, and the Human Papillomavirus as part of its 2024 Integrated Supplemental Immunisation Activities campaign.
According to The PUNCH, the Permanent Secretary of Health District 4 and Supervising Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board, Dr. Abimbola Bowale disclosed the figures during a press briefing at the Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.
She revealed that the integrated vaccination campaign, launched on October 19, 2024, was designed to close immunisation gaps and combat vaccine-preventable diseases across the state.
“This campaign represented a significant milestone in public health intervention, targeting measles, yellow fever, and HPV, with a focus on high-risk populations. By employing innovative strategies, we aimed to maximise coverage and impact,” Bowale stated.
According to the health official, 3,595,461 children were immunised against measles, achieving 85% coverage.
Additionally, 20,366,405 residents received the yellow fever vaccine, covering 95% of the target population, while 163,553 eligible individuals were vaccinated against HPV.
Bowale highlighted that the campaign’s success was bolstered by robust social mobilisation efforts, which engaged over 21 million people, along with investments in health system strengthening, including workforce training and enhanced cold chain infrastructure.
“This achievement underscores the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, to the health and wellbeing of Lagosians. Their leadership, alongside the efforts of the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, and the Special Adviser on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, has been instrumental in this success,” she said.
