An Indian Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Aam Aadmi Party, Gurpreet Gogi, has passed away after accidentally shooting himself.
His family confirmed that he suffered head injuries from the incident.
The shooting occurred around midnight, and Gogi was rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Gulf News reported on Saturday morning that Gogi was found late on Friday night with a gunshot wound.
A Punjab Police official confirmed the death, stating that it appeared to be accidental.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Jaskaran Singh Teja, addressed the media, saying, “As per the family members, he shot himself accidentally and sustained bullet injuries to his head. Gurpreet Gogi was declared dead at the hospital, and his body has been kept at the mortuary in the DMC hospital.”
The DCP further stated, “Cause of the death will be clear once the post-mortem reports come,” and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the incident, as reported by Gulf News.
Gogi, who joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2022, gained attention after defeating two-time Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu in the Ludhiana assembly elections.
In a similar incident in 2019, Carl Robinson, a candidate for the Mississippi state legislature, fatally shot his wife, Latoya Thompson, before killing himself after being served divorce papers.
