The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has extended a two-week grace period to owners of 762 revoked plots of land in Maitama, Abuja, to settle their Certificates of Occupancy payments.
The affected plots, situated in Maitama II, Cadastral Zone A10, are at risk of final revocation if payments are not made within the stipulated timeframe.
In a statement released in Abuja on Friday, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka, clarified that Wike’s focus is not to dispossess landowners but to ensure they fulfill their financial obligations to the government.
Olayinka referenced the October 5 publication that listed 3,273 allottees and titleholders yet to pay for their C of O.
Following the publication, titleholders were given two weeks to comply or face the withdrawal of their Right of Occupancy.
Of the initial list, 2,511 allottees have cleared their dues, leaving 762 defaulters.
“Yesterday, a notice of withdrawal of the R of O titles of the 762 defaulters was published. Since then, many of the affected allottees have offered to pay, and since the primary aim of the government is to ensure payment, a two-week grace has been given,” Olayinka stated.
Additionally, 614 other allottees with outstanding payments have been urged to settle their bills by January 3, 2025. Failure to comply will result in the final withdrawal of their R of O titles, in line with Section 28 of the Land Use Act of 1978.
“After Jan. 3, there will be no further extension, and withdrawal of the R of O titles of defaulters will be final,” Olayinka reiterated.
