Barcelona are reportedly planning to extend Robert Lewandowski’s stay at the club, a decision that could influence their pursuit of star forwards Erling Haaland and Viktor Gyökeres.
The 36-year-old Polish striker’s current deal is set to expire next summer. However, according to Sport on Sunday, the Catalan giants are likely to trigger a clause that would retain him for an additional year.
The club is also exploring the possibility of extending his contract further, potentially until 2027.
Lewandowski has been in remarkable form this season, scoring 20 goals in just 18 matches. His performances have reportedly persuaded Barcelona to hold off on a big-money move for another striker.
Although Barcelona has been linked with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres, their ongoing financial challenges make such high-profile signings difficult in the short term.
Instead, the club seems to be leaning on Lewandowski’s exceptional goal-scoring abilities as a temporary solution while they work towards economic stability.
According to Sport, Barcelona remains intent on finding a long-term replacement for the veteran forward but is prioritizing financial prudence.
A report by Goal on Sunday highlighted this approach, stating, “If Lewandowski maintains his current form, Barca may not need to dip into the market for another striker for at least another year.”
As Barcelona balances its strategy on and off the pitch, attention now turns to their Champions League clash with Brest on Tuesday.
Hansi Flick’s team will aim to recover after their frustrating 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo, where they squandered a two-goal advantage late in the match.
