A victim of a failed kidnapping attempt in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has died while receiving treatment for gunshot injuries inflicted by armed bandits.
The tragic incident unfolded on Sunday evening when suspected bandits launched a brazen attack on two commercial vehicles traveling through Dan’arau village along the Magama Jibia road.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers, heavily armed, opened fire indiscriminately, creating chaos and attempting to abduct passengers.
The swift response of the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Jibia and his team proved critical. Acting on an emergency call, the officers raced to the scene, engaging the attackers in a fierce gunfight.
Spokesperson for the Katsina State Police Command, ASP Abubakar Sadiq, explained that the officers successfully thwarted the kidnapping attempt and ensured the rescue of 14 passengers from the targeted vehicles.
“On November 24th, 2024, at about 1955 hrs, suspected armed bandits, armed with dangerous weapons, shooting sporadically attacked two (2) commercial vehicles at Dan’arau village along Magama Jibia road in Jibia LGA, Katsina State, in an attempt to kidnap the occupants,” Sadiq confirmed in a statement on Monday.
He added that the valiant efforts of the police saved lives, but two of the rescued victims had already sustained gunshot wounds before their intervention.
“Two rescued victims suffered gunshot injuries and were rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, one victim succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment,” he stated.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Aliyu Musa, praised the officers for their bravery and dedication, urging the public to support law enforcement efforts by providing timely information about criminal activities.
He assured the public that efforts were underway to track and apprehend the fleeing bandits.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by communities in Katsina State, as armed groups continue to target travelers and villages in the region.
