A fire incident that occurred on Thursday at a furniture market in the Ojota area of Lagos State has destroyed goods worth millions of naira.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the blaze, reportedly triggered by an electrical surge from a nearby transformer, broke out around 1 p.m.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement, noting the rapid spread of the fire across several shops in the market.
“Upon the arrival of the Tiger Response Team at the scene by 2:04 p.m., it was discovered that multiple shops used for producing and selling furniture items were engulfed in flames,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
He explained that initial investigations attributed the cause to a power surge from the transformer stationed beside the shops. Despite the intense blaze, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
“Fortunately, no casualties were recorded, and no injuries were sustained,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated, emphasizing the scale of the property damage, which amounted to a significant financial loss for traders.
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service, quickly mobilized to contain the fire, preventing further spread to surrounding areas.
“Through concerted efforts, LASEMA and other stakeholders successfully curtailed the fire from spreading, mitigating additional destruction,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.
This incident follows a similar fire at the Ajah Market by Alesh bus stop in Lekki earlier in the week, which also led to substantial losses as goods worth millions of naira were destroyed.
