A police officer on Thursday lost his life in a multiple-vehicle accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway near Kara Bridge.
The incident involved a truck, two buses, and a motorcycle, causing severe traffic congestion and leaving drivers stranded for hours.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement.
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the accident occurred when a truck loaded with goods collided with a moving bus.
The impact forced the truck off course, causing it to swerve off the road and fall onto a stationary bus parked along the roadside.
“A police officer attached to the Mopol 20 Division, who was navigating his way back to the office on his motorcycle, was caught in the incident and, unfortunately, died instantly,” Oke-Osanyintolu reported.
The LASEMA Response Team arrived swiftly at the scene to manage the aftermath. “On arrival, we found a Volvo truck with registration number FKJ 484 YA and a Toyota Hiace bus, BWR 371 XC, alongside a Mercedes Benz bus,” Oke-Osanyintolu explained.
“Further investigations revealed that the truck had lost control and crashed into the Mercedes Benz bus, eventually colliding with the parked Hiace bus,” he added.
Emergency personnel used heavy-duty equipment to recover the vehicles involved and remove the officer’s body.
The remains, along with the damaged vehicles, were handed over to the Ojodu Division of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The commodity carried by the truck was also recovered using our heavy-duty Super Metro equipment and transferred to the Ojodu Police Station for further action,” he added.
Traffic along the busy expressway was significantly disrupted, with long delays reported by commuters.
In a traffic update, Seni Ogunyemi, Commandant of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, acknowledged the severe congestion caused by the crash. “Our officers, along with the police, are actively working to clear the affected vehicles and restore traffic flow,” Ogunyemi assured.
