President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, offering his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the entire Nigerian Armed Forces.
As the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Tinubu conveyed his regret in announcing the passing of General Lagbaja, who died at the age of 56 after a prolonged illness.
A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday revealed that the COAS passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos.
The loss has left the nation grieving the departure of a distinguished and devoted military leader.
Born on February 28, 1968, in Nigeria, Lt. General Lagbaja was appointed Chief of Army Staff by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023, just a few months before his untimely death.
His exemplary military career began with his entry into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in 1987, where he demonstrated a commitment to national service that would shape his distinguished career.
On September 19, 1992, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps, becoming a part of the 39th Regular Course.
Throughout his illustrious service, Lt. General Lagbaja rose through the ranks, earning a reputation as a fearless and effective leader.
He held significant command positions, including serving as a platoon commander in both the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion.
His leadership was pivotal in several critical national security operations, such as Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Operation Lafiya Dole in Borno, Operation Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity, which spanned across Kaduna and Niger States.
His contributions to the country’s internal security efforts were invaluable.
Lt. General Lagbaja’s professional dedication was further exemplified by his educational achievements.
He was an alumnus of the prestigious U.S. Army War College, where he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, a testament to his commitment to continuous learning and excellence in military leadership.
He leaves behind a legacy of bravery, service, and sacrifice, as well as a loving family. He is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children, who mourn the loss of a beloved husband and father.
