Flying Eagles head coach, Aliyu Zubairu, has announced that foreign-based players will have the opportunity to compete for spots in Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.
Zubairu’s team secured qualification for the tournament by winning the WAFU B U-20 Championship in Togo in October.
In a closely fought final, the Flying Eagles defeated Ghana’s Black Satellites 2-1, clinching the regional title and demonstrating the strength of Nigeria’s local talents.
Zubairu had selected only home-based players for the WAFU B competition, relying solely on Nigeria’s domestic league to build his squad.
However, his recent statements indicate a shift toward a more inclusive approach as preparations for the continental tournament intensify.
During a meeting with the Kwara State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria in Ilorin, Zubairu spoke about the growing interest from eligible foreign-based players eager to join the Flying Eagles.
“We will not hinder their participation and are committed to selecting those with the necessary skills,” he emphasized, signaling his openness to talent from abroad.
This approach could strengthen the Flying Eagles’ squad, potentially boosting their performance in the upcoming Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.
