The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an investigation into claims of mistreatment of minors detained in relation to the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.
This directive, which was confirmed by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Adejobi Olumuyiwa, on X account, highlights the police’s response to public concern over the welfare of young detainees.
Reports surfaced following Friday’s court arraignment of 76 suspects—most of whom are minors—that several appeared visibly malnourished.
The proceedings turned tense when six of these minors fainted, leading to an abrupt pause as they were escorted out for medical assistance.
Reacting to the public outcry, Inspector-General Egbetokun suggested that the fainting episodes might have been orchestrated to discredit the police, asserting, however, that “the minors received immediate medical attention.”
He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to ensuring detainees’ welfare, emphasizing that all necessary protocols were followed to safeguard the health of those in custody.
The incident, which quickly gained public traction, prompted intervention from President Bola Tinubu.
In response to mounting criticism, Tinubu issued an executive order on Monday to withdraw all charges against the detained minors.
In an official statement titled, “IGP receives report on care, welfare of young detainees; assures follow-through on recommendations,” ACP Adejobi Olumuyiwa conveyed the Inspector-General’s position.
“Upon receiving the investigative report today in Glasgow, where the IGP is currently participating in Interpol General Assembly, the IGP vowed to thoroughly examine it and take necessary actions to address any procedural lapses or concerns,” the statement read in part.
To enhance transparency and foster child-sensitive practices, the IGP has scheduled a conference and workshop with all Deputy Commissioners of Criminal Investigation Departments and Heads of Investigation Units.
“To further ensure professionalism in investigation with emphasis on child-friendly investigation and care, the IGP has summoned all DCs CID and Heads of Investigation Units to a conference and workshop on November 7, 2024, at the Police Resource Center, Jabi.,” it added.
The event, set for November 7, 2024, at the Police Resource Center in Jabi, aims to reinforce professionalism in handling cases involving minors and vulnerable groups.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to upholding justice and accountability, especially for minors and other vulnerable individuals,” the statement concluded.
