A 58-year-old man, identified as Bamidele Omolayo, took his own life by consuming a toxic chemical substance and pesticide commonly known as “snipper” in Igburowo town, located in the Odigbo Local Council Area of Ondo State.
His lifeless body was discovered lying on a main road that connects the community to a nearby farm settlement after an octogenarian resident raised the alarm.
Witnesses revealed that prior to his death, Omolayo had a heated argument with a family member, during which he made a shocking threat to end his life.
One source, who preferred to remain anonymous, recounted, “I was told that he was engaged in a shouting match with his brother before he took the rash decision.”
Community members speculated that after the altercation, Omolayo may have left his home early in the morning, walking several kilometers to the outskirts of the town before carrying out the act.
The shocking nature of the incident left the entire community in a state of disbelief and mourning.
In the absence of a suicide note, local residents promptly reported the distressing event to the Ore Area Command of the Nigeria Police Station.
Following the notification, police officials arrived to retrieve the body, which was subsequently taken to the mortuary at the State Specialist Hospital in Ore, Odigbo Local Council.
The Spokesperson for Ondo State Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the occurrence of the suicide and indicated that an investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Omolayo’s decision.
“The police are aware of the report of the suicide, but we don’t have the details of what led to it; an investigation will unravel that,” she stated, underscoring the importance of understanding the underlying issues that led to such a devastating act.
