Liverpool have reportedly secured a deal to acquire Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, according to recent reports.
Mamardashvili, 23, made a significant impression during Euro 2024 while representing Georgia, catching the eye of Liverpool as their ideal long-term successor to current first-choice goalkeeper, Alisson.
Speculation earlier this summer hinted at the possibility of Mamardashvili joining Liverpool and then being loaned to Bournemouth, but, as first reported by MARCA, a finalized agreement has been reached that will see the Georgian goalkeeper return to Valencia on a season-long loan.
The transfer fee is reportedly around €40 million, £33.9 million, with the football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, noting that an initial payment of €35 million, £29.6 million, has been agreed.
Romano added, “Giorgi Mamardashvili here having medical as new Liverpool player in Valencia. Mamardashvili’s together with members of the staff and his agent.”
Mamardashvili is expected to travel to Merseyside for his medical soon.
Should everything proceed as planned, Mamardashvili will spend the upcoming season back at Valencia before making his permanent move to Anfield next summer.
At that time, Liverpool will face a crucial decision regarding the future of Alisson, who will be approaching his 33rd birthday.
Alisson, in an open discussion with The Times, acknowledged and supported Liverpool’s pursuit of Mamardashvili, saying, “The club needs to prepare for the future. We are not going to last forever here, I am getting old! No, for a goalkeeper I am still young, I have a lot of energy and I still have much to give for this club and I want to give to the club as much as I can.”
He added, “They will do it for different positions as well. We have so many important players with the contract expiring and the club needs to organise themselves for the future. I think it was a good idea. I knew about that [Mamardashvili] before it came out on social media and that is a good message for me because the club cares about what I think. They are doing the right thing but, on my side, as long as I have my contract here and as long as I am happy here, the club is happy with me, my family is happy here, I will stay.”
This move signals Liverpool’s commitment to planning ahead, ensuring a smooth transition in goalkeeping duties for the years to come.
