Sixteen people have been confirmed dead in a tragic accident involving multiple vehicles at the Ojoo-Iwo Road axis of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Tuesday.
The Federal Road Safety Corps in Oyo State reported that 17 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, FRSC spokesperson in Oyo State, Mr. Mayowa Odewo, a total of 35 individuals were involved in the accident, which included 14 male adults, 10 female adults, six female children, and five male children. Of those involved, only two people escaped unscathed.
Mr. Odewo revealed that the accident, which involved four vehicles, was caused by the brake failure of a Mack truck with the registration number AKM 548 ZY.
The other vehicles involved were a Nissan commercial bus (MUB 20 LG), a Nissan Micra taxi (BDJ 520 YC), and a private Honda Accord SUV (KRD 707 ER).
“The 17 injured victims have been taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased have been handed over to the police,” Mr. Odewo stated.
He also noted that the accident vehicles have been towed to the Irepodun Police Station along Agbowo-Ojoo Road.
Reflecting on the incident, Mr. Odewo emphasized the importance of vehicle maintenance and cautious driving, stressing that no one was saved by seat belts or other safety devices in this tragic event.
He urged motorists to take extra precautions on the road, saying, “This accident is a stark reminder of the need for proper vehicle upkeep and attentive driving to avoid preventable tragedies like this.”
