The Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps on Tuesday paraded two individuals accused of vandalism and impersonation.
According to The PUNCH, during the parade at the command’s headquarters on Kobape Road, Abeokuta, the Corps’ Commandant, David Ojelabi, revealed that Oluwatobi Salami, 30, was apprehended by Sagamu community members near OGD International Market on Saturday, August 10, 2024.
He was subsequently handed over to NSCDC officials.
According to Commandant Ojelabi, “Salami specializes in impersonating an official of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and an officer of the Nigerian Army. EFCC jackets and other dresses worn by the soldiers were found with him.”
He added that Salami would be handed over to the appropriate authority for further discreet investigation.
Ojelabi also provided details about the second suspect, Idris Zakari, 20, from Bagudu Local Government in Kebbi State.
Zakari was arrested on Friday, August 9, 2024, while vandalizing railway clips in Ifo Local Government Area.
The arrest was made by So-Safe Corps personnel, who then transferred Zakari to the NSCDC State Command for further investigation and prosecution.
The Commandant emphasized that acts of vandalism on government infrastructure are considered economic sabotage.
He assured that the Command would ensure those responsible are held accountable according to the law.
He also highlighted the importance of collaboration with other security agencies and the public to eliminate crime in the state.
Speaking to journalists, Salami confessed to stealing the EFCC uniforms from a hotel in Lekki, Lagos State.
He also admitted to commissioning the printing of Nigerian Army insignia on a vest he purchased to pass as an officer.
“I actually stole the uniforms from a bag that I picked up from a hotel in Lekki. I don’t usually wear it, but I have taken pictures with it and sent it to my friends who I have told I am an officer,” Salami said.
He expressed regret, adding, “I also like entering Lagos as an officer. I sincerely regret this and I pray that the government will use this to warn me and let me go, as my parents are dead.”
