Black Starlets of Ghana head coach, Laryea Kingston, has stepped down following his team’s 2-1 loss to Burkina Faso in the semi-finals of the WAFU B U-17 Championship.
The defeat, which took place on Saturday night, dashed Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2024 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations.
Kingston announced his resignation shortly after the match and exited the team bus en route to their hotel.
The Black Starlets are now set to face their longstanding rivals, Nigeria, in the third-place playoff on Tuesday.
In the other semi-final match on Saturday, Cote d’Ivoire dethroned Nigeria, the reigning champions, with a narrow 1-0 victory.
As a result, the Nigerian Golden Eaglets will also be competing for third place.
In Kingston’s absence, his assistant coaches and the technical director of the Ghana Football Association are expected to lead the team against Nigeria.
