League Champion, Bayer Leverkusen made history on Saturday by becoming the first team to complete an entire Bundesliga season undefeated.
Early goals from Victor Boniface and Robert Andrich secured a 2-1 victory over Augsburg in their final match of the season.
This victory marked Leverkusen’s 28th win out of 34 Bundesliga games. They clinched the league title in April, ending Bayern Munich’s 11-year dominance.
Leverkusen is also the first team to finish an unbeaten season in any of Europe’s top five leagues since Juventus did so in the 2011-12 Italian Serie A season.
Leverkusen’s remarkable season includes an unbeaten run of 51 games across all competitions.
Augsburg’s Mert Kömür managed to score in the 62nd minute, Leverkusen’s coach, Xabi Alonso, responded by bringing on star players Florian Wirtz and Granit Xhaka to maintain control, despite upcoming Europa League and German Cup finals.
Elsewhere, local rival Cologne faced relegation after a crushing 4-1 defeat to Heidenheim.
Union Berlin secured their survival with a dramatic stoppage-time goal from Janik Haberer, clinching a 2-1 win over Freiburg.
This result meant Bochum fell into the relegation playoff spot following a 4-1 loss to Werder Bremen.
Stuttgart claimed second place at Bayern Munich’s expense with a commanding 4-0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach, while Bayern suffered a 4-2 defeat at Hoffenheim in what was Thomas Tuchel’s final game as coach.
Mainz ensured its Bundesliga safety with a 3-1 win over Wolfsburg.
