Founder of Breast Without Spot Foundation, Prof. Ifeoma Okoye, has revealed that cervical cancer claims the lives of 23 to 28 women daily in Nigeria.
According to The PUNCH, Oloye, while speaking at the Goodway Foundation outreach in collaboration with Breast Without Spot Foundation in Ikotun, Lagos, emphasized the importance of regular examinations to reduce cancer mortality rates.
She said, “It has been observed that healthcare professionals often face challenges when many patients seek medical attention in advanced stages of the disease. This can place a substantial burden on the healthcare infrastructure, result in high costs, and potentially diminish the patients’ determination to fight for survival.
“Cervical cancer kills 23-28 Nigerian women daily. Hence, by conducting routine examinations of the breast and genital areas, it is possible to reduce the risk of developing cancers like breast cancer and cervical cancer, as well as various other forms of cancer that may affect the body.”
She noted that women often conceal their condition due to the stigma and fear of abandonment by their husbands, hindering them from seeking help.
Okoye emphasized the importance of quality nutrition for building resistance and urged women to avoid alcohol and tobacco.
Also, CEO of the Goodway Foundation,Chioma Ikoku, highlighted that over 70,000 people lose their lives to cancer in Nigeria. She called for partnerships to broaden the reach of the cancer awareness campaign.
