There is a concern that a total of forty-one migrants, including three children, may have lost their lives in a recent maritime accident in the Mediterranean.
According to United Nations agencies, this information is based on the accounts of four survivors who were transported to the Italian island of Lampedusa on Wednesday.
In a joint statement issued by the United Nations agencies responsible for refugees, children, and migration, the vessel made of metal capsized amidst inclement weather conditions during the nocturnal transition from Thursday to Friday, subsequent to its departure from the Tunisian port of Sfax.
According to the survivors’ testimonies, a group consisting of a 13-year-old boy, a lady, and two men were saved by a commercial ship and afterwards transported to Lampedusa by the Italian coastguard.
According to a distinct declaration, the Italian Red Cross, responsible for overseeing the migrant receiving facility on the island, reported that the four individuals were usually in a satisfactory state of health.
It said that none of the 45 persons missing were connected to the survivors, confirming the statement that there had been 45 people on the boat when it went down.
According to the report, the four people survived the shipwreck by floating on inner tubes.
The shipwreck is one of several fatal accidents that have been recorded recently following a time of poor weather.
