The chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has commended American University in The Gambia, Summit University in Offa, Kwara State, and Igbinedion University in Okada, Edo State, for their enthusiasm in taking on returning Nigerian students from Sudan.
According to The PUNCH, she stated this when she welcomed the Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye in Abuja.
The chairman promised that the message will be directed at the students and that those who are interested will follow the proper processes in a statement released on Saturday and signed by the spokesperson for NiDCOM, Abdulrahman Balogun.
Dabiri-Erewa said, “We were with JAMB and JAMB has given conditions, process and guidelines to follow, which I am sure you are aware, and the key thing is even if they have come to you and you have admitted them, we will need that letter from JAMB saying JAMB has given them admission, so we avoid situations that after graduation they cannot go for youth service.
“I thank you for the offer you are making to Nigerian students who have returned from Sudan, and I also thank you for saying you will give a generous concession for them”.
Ezemonye had earlier stated that the Institution offers programmes that have earned accreditation from the National Universities Commission and other specialised organisations.
He also praised the NiDCOM Boss for the excellent work she has been doing, noting the necessity of the visit to talk about placement options for the returnee students.
According to the announcement, the Co-founder of Friends of Nigeria, Europe, a Non-Governmental Organisation managed by Abiodun Odunuga, has received scholarship offers from the American International University, The Gambia, for a number of Nigerian student returnees from Sudan.
He went on to say that the scholarships were for students with practical courses who wanted to come to The Gambia, as well as for students who wanted to enrol in the Paris Graduate School for online courses like Human Resources and Business Management.
Summit University in Offa, Kwara State, has also expressed an interest in integrating student refugees from Sudan into its various academic programmes.
Dabiri-Erewa took the opportunity to show her gratitude to the airlines that had donated their services in order to transport her students.
She also expressed gratitude to the Dangote Foundation, the MTN Foundation, and all of the schools that provided financial aid in order for the students to return and finish their degrees in Nigeria.
