Nigeria Customs Service operatives of the Area 2 Command One in Rivers State have seized 27 containers due to non-compliance with the country’s import laws and regulations.
Area Comptroller, Baba Imam, informed the press about the confiscated containers on Friday, stating that 26 of the containers were seized, while one was detained due to violations ranging from contraband goods to lack of necessary certificates including National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control permit/licence, among others.
The seized containers were discovered over the past three months, according to the customs chief, who spoke at his first press conference since taking office in December 2022.
He then took the journalists on a tour to the custom’s facility where they displayed the seized containers and their contents, which included restricted items such as syringes, medication, and fireworks.
According to the statement by the command,
“The containers comprised 26, and another one detained for violations or contravention of various Customs laws and breach of procedures as provided under the revised import prohibition guidelines.
“These seizures and detention were made based on infractions related to import guidelines, which include contraband goods, false declaration, end-user certificate requirement from the office of the National Security Adviser, NAFDAC permit/licence among others in line with the Federal Government fiscal policies.”
