American fashion-prenuer, Kim Kardashian has purchased the Attallah Cross, jewelry owned by the late Princess Diana of Britain, for $197,453.
In the final five minutes of a recent Sotheby’s Royal and Noble auction, the amethyst cross attracted four bidders.
A selection of exceptional heirlooms and antiques with aristocratic provenance were offered at the Sotheby’s sale.
Former global chief executive of Asprey & Garrard, late Naim Attallah, was the previous owner of the cross.
The cross is said to have a diamond weight of approximately 5.25 carats and measures approximately 136 x 95mm.
At the auction, it was purchased for more than twice the pre-auction estimate by a Kardashian representative.
Princess Diana had a particular affinity for this pendant, which she most memorably wore in October 1987. It was crafted in the 1920s by court jewelers Garrard and is distinguished by its flowery design features.
In the 1980s, Naim Attallah CBE purchased the cross from Garrard.
He loaned it to Diana multiple times over the course of several years so that she could wear it to events thanks to their friendship.
The crucifix, it is believed, was exclusively worn by the princess and was never again seen in public after her passing.
The cross-shaped pendant is a striking and vibrant piece set with square-cut amethysts and enhanced by circular-cut diamonds. It is believed to be a one-of-a-kind private commission by Garrard for one of their frequent clientele.
