The Nigerian U17 women’s team, known as the Flamingos, delivered a sensational performance on Thursday in Ghana, overpowering Niger Republic with an emphatic 9-0 victory in the WAFU B U17 Girls’ Cup.
The Flamingos set the tone early, as Aishat Animashaun opened the scoring in the fifth minute, capitalizing on an in-swinger from Mary Mamudu.
Their dominance continued in the 17th minute when Shakirat Moshood unleashed a stunning 35-yard strike that left the Nigerien goalkeeper, Ndiaye Fatai Basiru, with no chance.
Moshood doubled her tally six minutes later, thanks to an assist from Animashaun.
The goals kept coming as Janet Akekoromowei joined the action in the 33rd minute, slotting home from close range.
She doubled her own tally in the 42nd minute and sealed her hat-trick with a commanding header moments later.
Not to be outdone, Moshood completed her hat-trick in the 45th minute, bringing the halftime score to a staggering 7-0.
The Flamingos showed no mercy in the second half. Moshood bagged her fourth goal in the 59th minute after intercepting the ball high up the pitch and driving forward to slot it past Ndiaye.
Peace Effiong capped off the commanding performance in the 79th minute with a long-range effort that sailed past the goalkeeper, securing Nigeria’s ninth and final goal of the match.
The Flamingos will shift their focus to their next encounter on Monday, where they are set to face Côte d’Ivoire in the ongoing WAFU B U17 Girls’ Cup.
